MANHATTAN – The Greek Independence Day Parade on Fifth Avenue was not graced by the sun this year. It was a little damp and chilly, but the sun of Hellenism and of Justice for Cyprus glowed in the hearts and shined in the minds of thousands of marchers and spectators.
Grand Marshal Robert Menendez, U.S. Senator from New Jersey, inspired the hundreds who heard him speak at events throughout the weekend. “It’s an extraordinary day. It is one of [my] highest privileges to have been named the grand marshal,” said the Manhattan-born Senator of Cuban descent. He has often expressed the powerful affinity he feels for the community and for Greece. He believes the Athens, as the birthplace of democracy, is still a beacon of light throughout the world.

ΝΕΑ ΥΟΡΚΗ. Η παρέλαση της Νέας Υόρκης, η οποία πραγματοποιήθηκε το απόγευμα της Κυριακής 25 Μαρτίου, κατά κοινή ομολογία ήταν μια από τις καλύτερες των τελευταίων ετών. Οι ομογενείς από όλες τις περιοχές της Νέας Υόρκης, του Κονέκτικατ, της Νέας Ιερσέης έως και του Μέριλαντ παρέλασαν υπερήφανοι με τις γαλανόλευκες, με τις παραδοσιακές ενδυμασίες, με τα άρματα και εξέφρασαν την υπερηφάνεια για τα επιτεύγματα και τη συνεισφορά στην Αμερική και στη γενέτειρα, καθώς επίσης και την αλληλεγγύη τους στην Ελλάδα.

Εθνικό Αναλυτικό Πρόγραμμα για τη διδασκαλία της Νέας Ελληνικής ως ξένης γλώσσας στις Ηνωμένες Πολιτείες, πρόκειται να παρουσιασθεί στο ετήσιο συνέδριο του Αμερικανικού Συμβουλίου Διδασκαλίας Νέων Γλωσσών (ACTFL), το οποίο θα πραγματοποιηθεί τον ερχόμενο Νοέμβριο στη Φιλαδέλφεια.
Η σχετική πρωτοβουλία ελήφθη από τoν Οργανισμό Δασκάλων της Νέας Ελληνικής Γλώσσας (MGLTA) και τον Ελληνικό Σύνδεσμο (Hellenic Link) σε συνεργασία με ακαδημαϊκούς και εκπαιδευτικούς από το ACTFL, το Odyssey Charter School (Γουίλμινγκτον, Ντελαγουέαρ), το Delaware Department of Education, καθώς και από αμερικανικά πανεπιστήμια και σχολεία που διαθέτουν ελληνικά προγράμματα και την Ομοσπονδία Ελληνοαμερικανών Εκπαιδευτικών.

Η διάλεξη της καθηγήτριας Ιστορίας της Τέχνης του Πανεπιστημίου του Σαλέντο Ιταλίας, Δρ. Χρύσας Δαμιανάκη, η οποία πραγματοποιήθηκε το απόγευμα της Κυριακής στο πνευματικό κέντρο του Συλλόγου Κρητών «Μίνως» στην Αστόρια, κέντρισε το ενδιαφέρον των ομογενών διότι εστιάστηκε στις ιδιαιτερότητες και στα κοινά χαρακτηριστικά των δύο Κρητικών συγγραφέων, του Νίκου Καζαντζάκη και του Παντελή Πρεβελάκη.
Η εκδήλωση διοργανώθηκε από τα Ιδρύματα «Πολιτισμική Κρήτη» και «Τεντ και Έρικα Σπυρόπουλος», σε συνεργασία με τον Σύλλογο Κρητών Νέας Υόρκης «Μίνως», την Ομοσπονδία
Ελληνοαμερικανών Εκπαιδευτικών και άλλους φορείς. Στην εκδήλωση παραβρέθηκε και ο πρόξενος της Ελλάδας στη Νέα Υόρκη Ευάγγελος Κυριακόπουλος, ο οποίος συνεχάρη τους διοργανωτές, καθώς επίσης και τους ομογενείς που στην κυριολεξία είχαν κατακλύσει την αίθουσα.
Παράλληλα, αναφέρθηκε και στην εκδήλωση που θα διοργανώσουν με τους εκπαιδευτικούς για το έργο της Πηνελόπης Δέλτα.

The contribution of ancient Greek medicine, the importance of Greek language and harmonious coexistence with nature was highlighted through an event organized for the second consecutive year by the Greek Society of Adelphi University, entitled “A taste of Greece”. The event was coordinated by the Professors and Advisors of the Greek Student Association, Gioula Serpanos and Nancy Biska.
The proceeds from the event will be allocated to the Hellenic – American Foundation “Plant Your Roots in Greece” for the creation of a 4.000 tree grove in Delphi, named after the American University.
“We strengthen and take care of our Greek and American roots”, stated the President of the Association, Aristides Kourkoumelis in his greeting address. Expressing the pride of Greek Diaspora students on our Cultural Heritage, that they are studying and promoting to the multicultural American community he emphasized that; “The American press may publish negative articles on the Greek economy, but all of us will leave this event with our head held high and proud of what we culturally represent”.

What do the New York State Senator, Mike Giannaris, New York Reps, Aravela Simota and Nicole Malliotaki, Judge Peter Georgalos, senior New York Times member, George Kalogerakis and other prominent Greek – American scientists, businessmen and artists have in common? All of them have taken Greek language lessons in Greek schools, during their student years; something they have not forgotten, honoring their teachers until today.
In this year’s event, organized by the Pan-American Hellenic Federation of Teachers and Greek Teachers Association “Prometheus”, which completes 35 years since its establishment, they were given the opportunity to thank the people who initiated them to the beauty of our language. And their teachers, honored them, feeling proud.
Τιμή στον Ελληνα δάσκαλο» στα πρόσωπα αποφοίτων ελληνοαμερικανικών σχολείων που διαπρέπουν στους τομείς ενασχόλησής τους απέδωσαν η Ομοσπονδία Ελληνοαμερικανών Εκπαιδευτικών και ο Σύλλογος Ελλήνων Εκπαιδευτικών Νέας Υόρκης «Προμηθέας» στην ομώνυμη εκδήλωση που συνδιοργάνωσαν οι δύο διδασκαλικές οργανώσεις το απόγευμα της προπερασμένης Κυριακής στο Πολιτιστικό Κέντρο του Καθεδρικού της Αγίας Τριάδας στο Μανχάτταν.
Οι δάσκαλοι της Νέας Υόρκης γιόρτασαν παράλληλα την επέτειο των 35 χρόνων του «Προμηθέα». Κύριος ομιλητής στην εκδήλωση ήταν ο Δρ. Ροδάμανθος Κοκόλης, ο οποίος έπλεξε το εγκώμιο της νεολαίας της Ομογένειας σήμερα, επισημαίνοντας τις πολλές και σημαντικές επιτυχίες των νέων τόσο στις σπουδές τους όσο και στην επαγγελματική τους σταδιοδρομία.
«Το μέλλον ανήκει στη νεολαία», είπε χαρακτηριστικά. Ο Δρ. Κοκόλης, αφού επισήμανε, κατά τη σύντομη ομιλία του, ότι ως Ελληνες «όλα μπορούμε να τα κατορθώσουμε, με την ψυχή και με το νου», τόνισε ότι η Ομογένεια δεν έχει ανάγκη από νέες οργανώσεις, αλλά από την ανάπτυξη, τη στήριξη και την σωστή λειτουργία αυτών που ήδη υπάρχουν, οι οποίες θα πρέπει να ενισχυθούν και με τη συμμετοχή των νέων.

“I am indebted to my father for living, but to my teacher for living well,” said Alexander the Great. On Sunday, June 5th, an elegant, free Luncheon was held at the Cultural Center of the Holy Trinity Cathedral, 337 East 74 St, New York. The Federation of Hellenic-American Educators and the Greek Teachers Association “Prometheus” honored the Greek Teacher at the Prometheus 35th Anniversary.
Outstanding students were honored by their teachers. A raffle was held. Donations for the event were from the Greek-American business and professional community. An outstanding Journal book was published, showing the role of the Modern Greek Teacher in America.
The Luncheon Committee, who organized this unique event, comprised the following persons: Stella Kokolis; Vasiliki Filiotis; Dr. George Melikokis; Adriana Fiolitis, Timoleon Kokkinos; Georgia Papadopoulou; Demosthenis Triantafillou, Dr. John and Emily Antonopoulos; Dr. John Siolas, Past President of Prometheus; Cathy Koutsoupakis and Georgia Filiotis.
